Family mediation is a voluntary process where a neutral third-party mediator helps family members resolve disputes and reach mutually agreeable solutions. It is often used in cases of divorce, separation, child custody, and other family conflicts. The mediator’s role is to facilitate open communication, encourage understanding, and assist the parties in exploring different options, without imposing decisions.
The primary aim is to create a cooperative atmosphere where family members can express their concerns and needs, working together to find solutions that benefit everyone involved. This process can lead to more enduring and satisfactory outcomes, reducing the emotional and financial stress associated with contentious court battles.
Even while going through a divorce, life goes on as usual. Work, children, family arrangements will all need your attention just as much as they needed it when things were alright.
This means, you will need to find a way of managing the divorce proceedings along with your routine. Unfortunately, when your divorce finds a way into the courtrooms and becomes a toy for solicitors to play with, you don’t have that choice of fitting it in your schedule as courts don’t work as per your schedule.
Moreover, if your divorce enters the arena of a courthouse, then the hearings become public information. This means that all your friends and relatives can get a juicy scoop of your divorce and if the stars are really bad, it can even land up in the local newspapers.
This can be a cause of immeasurable embarrassment for you if the reason for divorce involves adultery or any other sensitive reason.
Therefore, if you want to keep your personal life, personal and don’t want your work or other arrangements to suffer then you can consider family mediation as an option.
Apart from privacy and convenience of time, family mediation offers you a chance to settle your disputes in an amicable and mutually agreeable manner. When you choose family mediation or divorce and separation mediation over courtroom hearings and solicitors, it puts you in control.
You can schedule the meetings with the mediator when it is convenient to you and the information discussed in these meetings is never revealed to any third parties. See our fees
Mediation also helps you in settling disputes concerning fixed assets, financial assets, child custody etc. in a civil and cordial manner.

Family’s are deeply affected by divorce or separation, especially when there are children in the family. Often these painful situations can be helped with the supportof a mediator who will hold a Mediation Information Assessment Meeting or MIAM. A MIAM can guide communication and set the tone for the goals of mediation.
When attending a court proceeding on the matter, the family will need to present an FM1 (Family Mediation 1 form) which confirms that a MIAM has been held.
As of April 2014, significant changes were made to the judicial system regarding separation and divorces, particularly where children were involved. These changes ensure that the welfare of the children is paramount, with minimal impact on the children and as little negativity as possible. One of the major changes was a requirement for a mediation session or MIAM to be attended before any court proceedings to do with financial or custody matters (hence the need for a FM1 to be produced).
If the split is acrimonious and both parties find it difficult to be in the same room, as would happen with face to face mediation, it is possible to ask for shuttle mediation.
Shuttle sessions happen when the two parties are seated in separate rooms either virtually or physically and the mediator shuttles between the two, discussing issues and offering solutions.
Shuttle mediation is often a good solution with distance between the parties allowing for rational and reasoned thinking.
